We were landing.”He declined to tell the AP where they were coming from and going and if it was a hired or personal flight.West Elk Air’s website was not working Tuesday morning. This is not the first time Smith has been charged wi...

It’s not summer without a tinto de verano

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 07:15:46 GMT

By Rebekah Peppler, The New York TimesPARIS — If you’re convinced that red wine should be reserved for the colder, more sweater-worthy months, consider the tinto de verano.A fizzy, ruby-hued combination of red wine and citrusy soda served over ice, it’s to summer in Spain what a chilled bottle of rosé is to l’été in Provence.“It’s a fun, easy beach or pool drink,” said Sandra Cordero, the owner of Gasolina and the soon-to-open Bar Xuntos in Los Angeles. “I wouldn’t drink a tinto de verano below 80 degrees.”To make it, start by choosing the right tinto or red wine. The Spanish traditionally opt for more robust and tannic table wines: Look to tempranillo, garnacha or monastrell grape varieties, or ask your neighborhood wine shop to recommend a bottle. The short ingredient list means each element strongly influences the drink, so Cordero suggests picking a bottle you’d have on its own.Pour your chosen (and preferably chilled) tinto over ice, then cut the wine with a citrus-forwar...

Epic sundaes with saucy inspiration from America’s Test Kitchen

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 07:15:46 GMT

Eclectic flavors have their place. But there’s something so nostalgic, so all-American-childhood evoking about a classic ice cream sundae. The frosty scoops of vanilla ice cream. The hot fudge swirling round. A little butterscotch to gild that particular chilly lily. Sprinkles! Nuts! A cherry on top!You don’t need to hit the supermarket freezer case or even the local creamery to sate that craving. You can make no-churn ice cream at home and the orange-tinged hot fudge and butterscotch sauces to top it all off.The no-churn approach is an America’s Test Kitchen hack that lets you create deeply vanilla, velvety ice cream without an ice cream maker — just a blender and, of course, your freezer. Here’s the ice cream how-to, plus two flavor variations and four recipes for toppings, including a butterscotch sauce for caramel-ophobes, which calls for cooking brown sugar and butter together to give the sauce its complexity, sans candy thermometers. Also in the mi...

Elizabeth Holmes’ sentence reduced by almost two years

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is now scheduled to get out of prison nearly two years earlier than her original sentence mandated, according to an update from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.Holmes, 39, surrendered herself for imprisonment May 30, to start serving a sentence of 11 years and three months. Eligible inmates can also earn time off from their sentences by participating and completing programs for reducing post-prison re-offending, and educational, health, recovery, victim-impact and emp...

A heat wave will cook your electric car battery, if you let it

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 07:15:46 GMT

By Kyle Stock | BloombergConsider it ironic, or at least a little poetic: Electric vehicles, great for combating climate change, don’t do well in extreme heat. It’s a paradox being thrown into relief as multiple US states bake under heat waves that are becoming more frequent and more intense.High temperatures aren’t kryptonite for battery-powered vehicles. An EV in a hot climate has to work harder to keep its battery and its passengers cool, but the car will function just fine. On a chemical level, though, extreme heat is akin to heart disease for EV batteries, or a mellow and slow-moving form of cancer. That’s because when temperatures climb, the ions in a car battery speed up. Once that happens, they often have trouble attaching to the anode or cathode. The pressure and speed can also create small cracks, which slow chemical reactions and make for less usable battery life.To some degree, this happens with any fast-charging cycle. Using a Tesla Supercharger will move ions more quick...
