The Yankees had not scored more than two runs in each of their previous four games, but a pair of solo shots helped them end that streak in Tuesday’s 4-2 win over the Guardians at Yankee Stadium.Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but Anthony Volpe put the Yankees on the board in the sixth when he homered off fellow rookie Tanner Bibee. Gleyber Torres proceeded to knock Bibee out of the game before Anthony Rizzo tied things at two with an RBI single off New York native James Karinchak.“Just got into a good count and tried to get a pitch I could drive,” Volpe said of his third career homer, which sparked the Yankees’ lineup and the home crowd. Two of Volpe’s home runs have gone over the short right field fence in the Bronx, including Tuesday’s. The Orioles’ first game after their historic April went much like their first 19 wins of the season.Baltimore trailed 3-0 early, and it appeared as if the momentum from the club’s scorching hot April — one of the best opening months in team history — wouldn’t carry over into the first game of May.But then Ryan Mountcastle opened the floodgates in the fourth inning with his first of two home runs, as the Orioles scored five runs in the frame en route to an 11-7 win over the host Kansas City Royals. After scoring five in the fourth, the Orioles sent two across the plate in the fifth and three more in the sixth, and Mountcastle partook in all three crooked innings. The first baseman hit a two-run home run in the fourth, another two-run shot in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth. The multihomer game was the eighth of Mountcastle’s career and his second this season; the first was his nine-RBI night against the Oakland Athletics on April 11.Cedric M...

Connor Wong erupts for two home runs, leads Red Sox past Blue Jays 7-6

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:35:03 GMT

This is the kind of game that would have gotten ugly in a hurry last year. After cruising through the first four innings, the Red Sox saw things unravel in the top of the fifth, giving up six runs with two outs to flip what had previously been a 3-0 lead into a 6-3 Blue Jays advantage. We saw how quickly games like that against Toronto could snowball, but it’s apparent this year’s Red Sox club is made of tougher stuff.Plus, Connor Wong picked a great time to have the game of his life. The second-year catcher exploded for the best offensive performance of his big league career, going 4 for 4 with two home runs and a double while falling a triple short of the cycle in Boston’s 7-6 win. All four of his hits were scorched, and the two solo home runs tied and then gave Boston the lead after Toronto’s potentially backbreaking rally.“Definitely an awesome feeling,” Wong said afterwards. “Just trying to go out there and help the team win and luckily I ...

At an impasse with the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners, the independent nonprofit board that manages the Ramsey County Fair has announced there will be no fair this year, and future years could see the event move to another location, perhaps even outside the county. The Ramsey County Agricultural Society recently posted the cancellation announcement on its website, noting that Ramsey County will be the only one of Minnesota’s 87 counties without its own fair.“After working on an agreement with Ramsey County for more than three years, we cannot operate a fair under the conditions and demands from Ramsey County Commissioners,” reads the announcement. “It is very clear that they do not want a county fair.
