Colorado Democrats propose tougher oil and gas permit rules to curb air pollution — risking showdown with Polis

Legislation being proposed in the Colorado General Assembly would make the state’s air pollution permitting rules more stringent, largely impacting the oil and gas industry and setting up a potential showdown between the governor and supporters of the bill in the statehouse and among environmental groups. The bill, to be introduced later this week, has been in the works for two years, and its creation was championed by 24 environmental groups that, in a March letter of support, urged Gov. Jared Polis to back the legislation and criticized him for failing to include them in a recent plan to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in the oil and gas industry.Environmentalists and the bill’s sponsors want state regulators to perform a modeling analysis of potential pollutants from any newly proposed oil and gas sites, and to consider the cumulative impact oil and gas production has on the state’s climate, before issuing new air permits. But it may be hard to convince the govern...Is your Denver lawn snow-sick from a brutal winter? Here’s how to help

My dad commonly used the expression “sick and tired of being sick and tired.”He applied it to many situations in life, which mostly led to a laugh or shrug by his family. I’m not sure he’d apply this rationale to turf grass, but when looking at many lawns this time of year, even while they are dormant, some look to be in poor shape — sparse in many places and looking worn out.If grass could talk, it might say it was sick and tired from years of use, even though lawns are supposed to be well-used.Let’s roll up our sleeves and get our lawns into great shape for the coming outdoor season with four easy steps. After the snowy winter areas of the lawn can show signs of matted snow mold, just let it dry and rake it out. (Betty Cahill, Special to The Denver Post)1. Start by taking a close look at the lawn for telltale damage. There could be gray snow mold where snow remained most of the winter — found in shady lawn locations, north sides of fences and buildings and w...Colorado wildflower season is months away; so, why not check out an Arizona superbloom

Superblooms take place in some desert climates after unusually wet winters, when typically dormant seeds and plants wake up. The result, especially in California and Arizona, can be hillsides carpeted in color as thousands of flowers pop open around the same time.“There is not a hard and fast definition of superbloom,” said Michelle Thompson, chief of communications for Arizona State Parks. “The last time we had it was in 2019, and it depends on the weather and seed germination year to year.”While California is full of superblooms at the moment, they are a little harder to find in Arizona, but there are still plenty of flowers that make the trip worthwhile.Orange California poppies in bloom at Lost Dutchman State Park. (Mindy Sink, Special to The Denver Post)The springtime weather in Phoenix this year, with highs in the 70s and 80s (or even lower with a little rain), has made for a pleasant hiking season, too. By Jordan Valinsky | CNNAn enormous Whole Foods in downtown San Francisco that opened just last year is temporarily closing. The company said rampant crime in the area forced it to shut down. The nearly 65,000-square foot location at Trinity Place in the city’s Mid-Market neighborhood shut its doors Monday to “ensure the safety” of its employees, a Whole Foods spokesperson said. Although Whole Foods did not share any additional information on the conditions that led to the store closing, the spokesperson added that it was a “difficult decision to close the Trinity store for the time being.” Affected employees will be transferred to nearby stores. The store at 8th and Market streets will not open Tuesday, the spokesperson said. The store’s website has also disappeared.Heralded as a “flagship store” following its March 2022 opening, the Whole Foods was one of the largest supermarkets in downtown San Francisco. Klay Thompson was excited to learn the Warriors would play the Sacramento Kings in the first round of the playoffs — and it’s not just because it’s a favorable travel scenario for both teams.“That’s going to be fun,” Thompson said Sunday afternoon. “First time in NBA history, it’s going to be really special.”But fans are going to have to fork over some serious cash just to get inside the building for the series opener next weekend.Ticket prices for the first postseason meeting between the Warriors and Kings has reportedly skyrocketed to historic highs, with some saying it could be the most expensive ticket for the first round of the NBA playoffs ever.Prices on ticket broker website TickPick for Game 1 at Golden 1 Center on Saturday start at $497 as of Monday afternoon. If that price holds up, Front Office Sports reported that would make Saturday’s opener the most expensive first-round NBA playoff game on record.Related ArticlesGolden State W...Opinion: California’s salmon season shutdown was avoidable

Fishery managers announced last week that salmon fishing in California and most of Oregon is completely closed this year. You can see the Golden Gate Bridge from my boat, where Chinook have passed for millions of years on their journey from the ocean, through the bay and Delta, up the Sacramento River. There is communal anticipation before the first trip of the summer, checking anchor winches and hydraulic hoses, safety equipment, leaders, weather reports. Boats are freshly painted and deck tanks for holding fish are installed. Not this year — this year feels like a funeral.Salmon and Dungeness crab are the backbone of the San Francisco fishing fleet. Other fisheries like black cod, shrimp, halibut, rockfish, anchovies and herring contribute, but salmon and crab pay the bills and keep us working year-round.Wit...Opinion: Ukraine has given the world a blueprint to fight hunger
Published Mon, 11 Nov 2024 05:14:36 GMT
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year triggered tumult across global grain markets. As the cost of corn and wheat surged, panic spread about instability in countries from Yemen to Bangladesh that depend on the warring region for low-cost grains. Would famine worsen? Would civil unrest ensue? While food-insecure countries have suffered keenly from high grain prices over the past year, some of the consequences we feared most have been avoided. Even as the conflict continues to rage, grain markets have calmed down considerably, with prices close to pre-invasion levels — a better outcome than many expected.Astute diplomacy, next-level technologies, a resilient distribution infrastructure and efficient trading strategies were key elements of coping with these disrupted markets. The world acted quickly to leverage those strengths across global networks, moving grain from regions where it’s cheap and plentiful to those where it was scarce and costly. At a time when the global food supply is...Latest news
