Hegerberg seeks to emulate Messi and win World Cup to sate unfulfilled career with Norway

She has often been described as the Lionel Messi of women’s soccer because of her scoring feats. Now Ada Hegerberg is looking to accomplish what the Argentinian great finally achieved a few months ago and win a World Cup to sate a largely unfulfilled international career.A total of three goals across three major international tournaments for Norway doesn’t do justice to one of the greatest scorers in the history of the women’s game. Hegerberg, after all, has netted more goals in the Champions League — the highest stage in women’s soccer at club level — than any player, with 59. She became the record holder at the age of 24.With Lyon, she’s a six-time Champions League winner, an eight-time French league winner and a six-time French Cup winner. She has a scoring average of more than a goal per game for Lyon, European soccer’s most decorated team.Oh, and of course, she was the first female winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2018 at an award ceremony in Paris marred by a French DJ asking...

Unite the right? Cordon sanitaire holds back EU-wide right-wing alliance, for now

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 18:53:47 GMT

Italian and French right-wing leaders Matteo Salvini and Marine Le Pen hoped to lay the groundwork for a right-to-far-right majority for the European Union in a meeting Monday. But mainstream conservatives in Brussels had other ideas. With less than a year to go until the European elections, speculation is mounting that the center-right European People’s Party (EPP) could build new alliances with fledgling right-wing groups in the newly formed European Parliament. This could potentially end its decades-old coalition with the center-left Socialists and Democrats.Salvini, who leads Italy’s populist League party, offered to act as a middleman between the EPP and the far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) grouping, to which his party belongs. “Salvini reiterated his determination to build a common home for the center-right alternative to socialists, without vetoes,” wrote the League in a readout of the meeting with Le Pen. “I want to unite the whole center-right, the unity of our po...

Leon Rose became president of the basketball operation at Madison Square Garden a little over three years ago, March of 2020. In that time, Rose has done a lot, mostly because the Knicks have come back from being on the wrong side of the clown line in the NBA. They have finished fourth in the Eastern Conference and finished fifth, and won just the team’s second playoff series – wait for it – in this century. It’s a lot. Just not enough. There has to be some urgency now for Rose, as patient an executive as he obviously likes being, if not as much as he likes being the New York City sports executive that the media can’t find. As crazy as this sounds, just because of the joke the Knicks had become over the two decades before Rose got to the Garden, getting the Knicks this far is the easy part compared to what comes next:Moving up from the middle of the pack in the conference to the top of it.To do that, Rose still needs a star. You keep hearing that the sta...
